Despite some negative backlash from Congress members and men in the military, Jacqueline Cochran, with the help of General Henry H. Arnold, fought for women aviators to serve as ferry pilots during World War II. Her persistence led to the creation of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) and their eventual military recognition and served to inspire future women aviators.
